Welcome to the thirty-second edition of Viewpoints, our monthly e-newsletter. We at Insulite Laboratories believe that half the battle of losing weight lies in avoiding the trap of sabotaging your own best efforts. By that, we mean better health via weight loss stems from a combination of watching what you eat AND regular exercise.

All too often, people do the former without enough of the latter, thus condemning themselves to frustrating failure. Indeed, far too many are trying to lose weight without either carefully monitoring their daily carbohydrate intake to get it lower and doing the right amount of exercise.

The government recommends 30 minutes of moderate physical exercise like walking most days to improve health. And an average 60 minutes of physical activity most days is the amount experts say is needed to prevent weight gain, let alone cause weight loss.

A recent survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that only 23% of people who say they are working on their weight are actually following the right approach to eating a healthy, balanced diet and exercising correctly.

People who are not getting the desired results from their efforts to control their weight need to "intesify their efforts on one or both sides of the equation," says the report’s lead author, CDC epidemiologist Edward Weiss.

Even with the holiday season coming up, there’s no time like the present to start your healthy new regime. Make an early resolution to lose 10% of your total weight permanently over the next year – and then look forward to the greatly improved sense of well being that will come your way if you stick to your plan.

The chances of developing irreversible Type 2 Diabetes can now be calculated by checking the age at which a person first became obese.The heavier a person is at an early age, the more likely he or she is to develop Diabetes.

Efforts to prevent obesity should start as early as possible because excess weight can began damaging bodies in people as young as 10 to 15, says Venkat Narayan, head of epidemiology and statistics at the Diabetes branch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Narayan analysed data gathered between 1997 and 2004 in the National Health Interview Survey of more than 800,000 Americans. He found that males and females of healthy weight at 18 had a 1-in-5 to 1-in-6 chance of developing Diabetes in their lifetime.

But the risk greatly increases with a higher reading of BMI or body mass index - a measurement of body fat based on height and weight. A BMI reading of under 25 is regarded as normal. A BMI of between 25 and 29 is classed as overweight, while 30-34 is obese and 35 or higher is very obese.

Obesity is increasingly being seen in young people and adolescents, as well as all other age groups of the U.S. population. "If you're very obese at 18, you have a 3-in-4 chance of developing Diabetes," said Dr. Narayan.

The New York Times recently described the various forms of Diabetes as "a stealth epidemic" and labelled the disease as the biggest health crisis of the 21st century. Approximately 20 million Americans already suffer from Type 2 Diabetes and the figure is increasing all the time.

Some 90% of people with Type 2 suffer from excess weight or obesity. African-Americans are especially prone to Diabetes, with up to 45% of the entire black population thought to be affected.

Before the onset of the disease, however, most people develop reversible Pre-Diabetes, a condition in which blood sugar levels are elevated beyond normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes.

An underlying cause of Pre-Diabetes is Insulin Resistance, an imbalance of blood glucose and insulin. Without regular exercise and dietary changes to reverse Insulin Resistance and reduce weight, Pre-Diabetes may lead to the Type 2 variety, which can only be managed for the rest of a person’s life and often requires daily injections of insulin.

Type 2 Diabetes severely increases the risk of blindness, amputation and kidney disease, as well as a heart attack or stroke.

New Research


Diets rich in saturated fats have long been known to be bad for the heart by causing weight gain and raising levels of artery-clogging cholesterol. But new evidence is emerging that unhealthy diets may also lead to Alzheimer’s Disease, which destroys vital brain cells and can lead to memory loss and other forms of mental impairment.

Around 16 million Americans are expected to suffer from Alzheimer’s by 2050, though many could escape this fate by losing weight via switching to a Mediterranean-style diet of fish, vegetables, fruit ... and a daily glass of red wine.

Researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina took healthy lab mice and fed them a high saturated fat and cholesterol diet similar to that eaten by a large proportion of the U.S. population.

After two months, the mice, who were middle-aged by this time, flunked a memory test by making errors in finding their way around a water maze. Prior to going on the new high fat diet, the mice had had no trouble negotiating the maze.

The mice also showed an increase in a toxic brain protein called beta amyloid. Many scientists believe deposits of this protein in the brain lead to Alzheimer's. By switching to a diet low in saturated fat, experts think it may be possible to avoid the build-up of beta amyloid and thereby lower the risk of developing the disease.

Italians and others who live by Mediterranean have long been renowned for their longevity and enjoy lower rates of cardiovascular disease than Americans. A key feature of any Mediterranean diet is red wine, which appears to offer protection against Alzheimer’s.

Researchers at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York gave mice that had been genetically altered to develop Alzheimer's a small dose of red wine every day for 11 months. A memory test was then adminstered to the mice, along with a control group that had received no wine. Again, the test involved a maze once familar to both sets of mice.

The "teetotal" Alzheimer mice faltered on the test. But the group that had been drinking tiny amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon daily for nearly a year found their way around the maze with ease, showing they still had a sharp memory.

One of the benefits of red wine is that it’s a particularly rich source of resveratrol, a phytoalexin found in grape skins which increases HDL "good" cholesterol and prevents blood clotting. Red wine has much more resveratrol than white because it is fermented with the red skin still in place, whereas white wine has the skin removed from the grape before fermentation.

Flavonoids are also abundant in red wine and exhibit antioxidant properties which help prevent blood clots and plaque formation in arteries. So red wine may aid healthy blood flow to the brain and help stave off Alzheimer’s.

But alcohol consumption can cause its own health problems, so doctors recommend limiting intake to a single glass of red wine a day. Diabetics especially need to consult their doctors before drinking alcohol.

Losing weight by changing to a healthy diet and getting regular exercise is also vital. Washing down a double cheeseburger and large portion of fries with a glass of red wine is more likely to boost your waist measurement rather than your brain!

Weight Loss: Myth or Fact?

Myth: Most overweight toddlers lose their baby fat.

Fact: No, they don’t. New research shows that about 60% of youngsters who are overweight while they are pre-schoolers still weigh too much by the age of 12, setting them on the path to obesity and its attendant health problems.

Parents are often mistaken if they think their children will outgrow their baby fat. Studies shows that excess weight at an early age can lead to health problems like cardiovascular disease later in life.

Scientists at ten U.S. universities examined the records of 1,042 children whose height and weight were recorded 7 times from ages 2 to 12.

The researchers found that 80% of overweight or obese children in their early school years still had weight problems when they reached the age of 12. The more times a child reached the "overweight" category during the pre-school and elementary years, the more likely he or she was to be overweight at 12.

Experts say the findings show that parents need to start early to help their children lose weight with a balanced diet and regular exercise, so they are not prematurely exposed to serious illnesses such as cardiovascular disease and Diabetes.

Q. How can nuts and seeds help to ward off Metabolic Syndrome (Syndrome X)?

A. According to a study conducted by Columbia University’s Department of Medicine, nuts and seeds have been found to decrease inflammation in blood vessels. As a result, there’s a reduction in the risk of developing the cluster of increased risk factors for heart disease called Metabolic Syndrome (Syndrome X), as well as Type 2 Diabetes.

The study looked at about 6,000 individuals between the ages of 45 and 84. Researchers found that individuals who ate nuts and seeds five or more times a week had a decrease level of inflammatory markers, which are specific proteins in your body used to monitor inflammation. (1)

Inflammation is the body’s response to injury which causes white blood cells to be released into the bloodstream. Although this is a natural process, it can damage blood vessels. Some triggers of inflammation include exposure to increased insulin, elevated LDL "bad" cholesterol, elevated blood sugar, smoking and exposure to second hand smoke and infections. Inflammation has been long associated with heart disease and new studies are showing it may also be linked to Type 2 Diabetes.

Plaque build-up may occur in inflamed blood vessels, leading to a narrowing of the diameter, which impedes blood flow and can increase the risk of high blood pressure and stroke.

The actual link between inflammation and Type 2 Diabetes is still being studied. But the connection may be due to the fact that Type 2 Diabetics are often overweight and suffering from elevated blood sugar levels – a key factor associated with inflammation. (2)

Walnuts are a healthy snack choice because they are high in mono-unsaturated fats and contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are linked to decreased inflammation via lower LDL cholesterol and higher levels of HDL "good" cholesterol.

Raw almonds are also good for you, as well as pumpkin and sunflower seeds, which taste delicious sprinkled on salads.

Labels that declare food to be low-fat persuade some people to over-indulge in the mistaken belief that the contents won’t make them put on weight. In fact, low-fat food can cause weight problems, even though it seems to be designed to improve health.

Some overweight people think low-fat food is much less fattening than it actually is, says Brian Wansink of Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab in Ithaca, New York. To discover how much low-fat labels influence intake, Wansink and colleagues asked more than 250 people at an open house to try some new types and colors of M&M candies.

The participants were of either normal weight or overweight and were told they could eat as many M&Ms as they liked. On offer were regular M&Ms as well as what was said to be a new low-fat variety of the candy, even though there actually is no low-fat version of M&Ms on the market.

When asked how many calories they thought they’d consumed, nearly everyone in both weight groups underestimated the number by between 50 and 100.

Over-weight participants consumed on average 23 more of the "low-fat" M&Ms than the regular variety. People of normal weight ate on average 8 more "low-fat" M&Ms than the regular type.

Low-fat foods have a "halo effect," which means people don’t feel as guilty about eating them, says Wansink. "People see them as a get-out-of-jail-free card," he added.

America’s chefs have been accused of fueling the current epidemic of excess weight gain and obesity in the U.S.

A conference of the Obesity Society was presented with a survey of 300 chefs showing that most restaurants serve up portions that are two to four times bigger than the government’s recommended serving sizes. The chefs know the effects that large meals are having but say their customers expect supersize portions as part of the enjoyment of dining out.

Restaurants play a significant role in weight issues because the average American adult bought 209 meals away from home last year, either in a restaurant or as a takeout. And the typical restaurant meal has at least 60% more calories than the average home-cooked meal, according to market research firm NPD Group.

Meals at restaurants have steadily increased in size since the 1970s in tandem with America's obesity rates.

The new survey found that 60% of the chefs questioned serve up steaks that are 12 ozs or larger, even though the government’s dietary guideline for cooked meat is 3 ozs. Most dished up one or two cups of pasta with a meal, where the government recommends half-a-cup.

Other findings:

  • 76% of chefs said their portions were "regular" size. Only 17% described them as large or extra-large.
  • 86% said customers would notice (and presumably complain) if the restaurant reduced portion sizes by 25%.
  • 58% said that if customers are served a large amount of food, it's up to the diner to eat an appropriate amount.

The survey also showed that veteran chefs tend to serve smaller portions, while younger chefs produce large platefulls. One possible reason is the older chefs were trained a couple of decades ago when portions were smaller. The younger chefs, on the other hand, grew up during a time when ever-bigger portions became the norm.

Nutritionists counsel that, no matter what the size of your portion, you don’t have to eat it all. Don’t be shy about asking for a takeout bag and enjoy the remainder next day.


Man drinking beer.Having a drink is part and parcel of holiday cheer for many people at this time of year. But it’s important to be aware of what alcohol does to your system and how it can encourage over-eating.

On an empty stomach, for instance, alcohol is quickly absorbed through the lining of the stomach and the intestines into the blood, which whisks it throughout the body and along to the brain. Blood-alcohol content begins to creep up, causing the first subtle effects of intoxication to spread through the nervous system.

As well as stimulating appetite, alcohol is read by the body as poison. Once it enters the system, a kind of "booze bomb squad," made up of a host of enzymes called alcohol dehydrogenase, is then called in to help metabolize the alcohol into components that, ultimately, can be either used or expelled by the body.

While alcohol dehydrogenase can generally metabolize about one alcoholic drink an hour (i.e. one 12-oz. can of beer, an ounce-and-a-half of hard liquor like Scotch or five ozs. of wine), it comes in limited supplies, difffering from person to person and lifestyle to lifestyle.

Ever wondered why you are so thirsty the morning after drinking a little too much? That’s because the alcohol molecule ends up as carbon dioxide and water. It acts as a diuretic and the result is dehydration.

Clear liquors like vodka, rather than alcohol like bourbon, may be less likely to lead to a hangover because they don’t have substances called congeners that can worsen the after-effects of drinking too much.

But an even better idea to limit yourself to one drink. Savor it by drinking slowly and keep a clear head. If you’re planning to drive over the holiday season, it's best not to drink anything alcoholic at all.
